4 Medical Spa Treatments That Can Give You Plump Lips

If your lips are thinning due to age, or if you were born with thin lips, you might be considering lip fillers or other ways to get plumper lips. Here's a look at four medical spa treatments that you might want to consider.

1. Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic acid makes your skin plumper and it also stimulates your lips to produce collagen. These dermal fillers can be used to make your lips larger and to give them a more attractive shape. The hyaluronic acid injections also contain an anesthetic so the injections aren't painful.

The doctor can regulate how much of the dermal filler to inject so you don't have to worry about your lips looking too large. This medical spa treatment lasts for several months, but it isn't permanent, so it needs to be repeated to maintain your plump lips.

2. Fat Transfer

A fat transfer is a little more complex, but it can have permanent results. To do this lip plumping procedure, the doctor has to use liposuction to remove a small amount of fat from your body. The fat is then injected into your lips to make them fuller.

It could take several months for a full blood supply of fat to become established, but when the fat transfer is successful, the results are permanent. However, your lips might continue to change their shape as you age.

There is a recovery period of a few days after having a fat transfer procedure. Even hyaluronic acid injections have a short recovery period since the injections can cause swelling that could take a few days to go down.

3. Botulinum Toxin Injections

The same botulinum toxin injections that remove lines around your eyes and forehead can be used to make your lips fuller. This technique is called a lip flip. The doctor injects the botulinum toxin near the corners of your mouth and the center of your upper lip to relax the muscles. This causes your lip to flip up and gives the appearance of a fuller upper lip.

Like hyaluronic acid injections, botulinum toxin injections are temporary. To maintain your plump lips, you'll need to have the injections repeated periodically.

4. Surgery

If you want a permanent solution for your thin lips, you might talk to a doctor at a medical spa about having lip surgery. With this procedure, the doctor moves your upper lip border so your lip has a fuller appearance and improved shape. Recovery from this procedure is fast, and your doctor may use stitches that dissolve so you don't have to get them removed.
